Training 11-19-12
Galt, 30 miles. QuestXS (open cockpit). 22.0mph average. I removed one of the camp-mat pads I used for a shim behind my hips. This made my knees feel better and my legs feel better overall today. Still, I was slow. Part of that might be that when I tried to top off my Risse shock I couldn't get the pump off without letting most of the air out. As a result I'm back to lowriding in the rear and probably catching more air underneath. One more problem.

Don't let your average speeds get you down, ayk, there's so many variables going on at any one time. Btw, a rolling average between 22-26 mph, with stop signs thrown in, etc, imho, is outstanding.
When I was training with my Quest, I'd usually end up with a rolling average of around 17mph for 20 miles or so. Sounds pathetic I know. 85% of that time was easy pedaling and returning to the starting point of my 1-2 mile sprints where the speeds varied between 40-48mph for short duration. And, yes, I almost always did my speed workouts on a slight downhill with big gears thanks to the mid-drive.
Once again, Randy, I'm learning a lot from you by reading this blog...the how's and why's of muscles working, etc. Keep it up!
Thanks again, John. I wish I could still sprint. Well, I can, but just once. There's no way I can train it, though. Funny thing, I used to be a competitive powerlifter and was naturally oriented to short bursts of power. Man, what happened? Now I'm strictly a steady-state guy.
As I recall, you had a lifting background as well. Are you still lifting? Like sprinting, I find lifting anything but the tiniest weights negatively affects my feeling of well being anymore. Alas, I think the only thing that would help me is hormone replacement therapy :-)
Do you have any racing plans with your Catbike? With a nice tailfairing that would make a really good racer.
Hi Randy. I just started last week into some BodyPump style classes at the local gym. Emphasis on light weight, high reps, and good form. Our winter doldrums have set in here in western Oregon which is wet and depressing weather for the next five months or so. Time to get the muscle mass back. That's my goal...working towards a lean body.
As in your situation, don't rule out the hormone thing at all. Might be something to it. AYK, training intensity is a touchy thing w/o plenty of recovery time between sets and days at least at my age.
A good memory...I was into weights for much of my life.
I think my racing days are probably over except for mixing it up with the locals with the Musashi. Speaking of that, I don't know if I mentioned it but I have the complete female molds to crank out exact copies of M5 tailboxes. The OHPV guys in Portland know it but I'm more or less keeping that underwraps as the mold is an 'unauthorized'
copy if you know what I mean. Take care
